“Welcome to a new age of gods and monsters.”
Dr. Henry Jekyll
The Mummy launches the “Dark Universe” that Universal is trying to set up. A cinematic universe (like the MCU) connecting all of the classic monsters like Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Invisible Man. With Bride of Frankenstein being the next installment in this universe, I’m hoping it picks up a little bit as the Mummy was a very rough start.
My biggest issue is it was very choppy, and it left me confused at some points. Now it wasn’t the worst movie I’ve ever seen in my life (although it was up there in that category), but it was an enjoyable enough action film that you can sit back and eat popcorn to. My biggest issues with it is that it didn’t quite know what kind of movie it wanted to be, and was also trying to set up an entire universe at the same time and you could feel that it was definitely rushed for a summer release. It would jump back and forth between several genres that didn’t all quite work together. I think if it would have returned to the horror roots from which it originated it would have fared better, but instead felt like a very generic action film.
Not a whole lot on the positive side, but it had some nods to the Brendan Fraser Mummy films, and had some decent action scenes, and some fairly creepy scenes and a few jump scares (but don’t go into it expecting anything but an action film). I just wish it had focused on the horror aspect of it more rather than jumping around.
I’m going to give The Mummy a 3/10, I don’t really recommend it, but I have met a few people who enjoyed it. Again not the worst movie on the planet, but definitely one of my least favorites I’ve seen in a movie theater. It’s kind of unfortunate that the Dark Universe died before it even really began because I was kind of looking forward to The Invisible Man and Creature From the Black Lagoon, but maybe that’s for the best.
