“Do animals talk in this dimension? Cause I don’t wanna freak anyone out…”
Spider-Ham
Aside from it being Spider-Man and I’m biased because I love the character, this movie was absolutely spectacular. I was hesitant going into this one, having not liked a movie by Sony Pictures Animation since the first Hotel Transylvania film, but little did I realize it would shoot to almost the top of my list.
I want to start with just praising the animation style of this film. The bright colors, the crazy transitions, the comic book aesthetic to it. I was in love with every frame of this movie! The cinematography of this film was also amazing, I don’t normally say that about animated films, but this one was very noticeable with every shot being thoroughly thought out. The soundtrack was also awesome, I’m not a huge rap person but I think the songs fit very well into the style of the movie.
As we follow Miles on his journey across New York, we learn what it takes to put on the mask and become a hero. Followed along by various other versions of Spider-Man from the alternate dimensions, this movie was a whole lot of fun, and a lot funnier than I was expecting it to be (I don’t know why I expected any less than the directors of the Lego Movie).
Originally they were going to bring back Tobey Maguire to voice Peter Parker Spider-Man, but was eventually scrapped due to the directors thinking it would confuse audiences. I would have absolutely lost my mind, and hope that they might decide to bring him back in the sequel. Jake Johnson did awesome though, and gave us a new take on the character.
That being said, and this being my 6th Spider-Man film I’ve seen in theaters, I don’t love the character any less, and this film quickly became my favorite of the Spider-Man films. 9/10.
